the conflict at the rifts have become too frequent for him to ignore especially not after having been involved with a few of them. but as he has always preached, they need to be more proactive. less reactionary.[break][break]

it's a shame he hadn't briefed lam logan as much. all lam is expecting is to have a relatively safe expedition.[break][break]

Lam felt a bit like he was being led, blindfolded. It feels a bit strange to just take Matias’ vague word for it, but he can’t exactly back out now, either.[break][break]

“The border? No, not yet. Just the deep sea.” He and Rook had sparsely talked about wandering to the rift near Mt. Pyre, but their first foray into the odd ocean-like realm had been exhaustive enough to prompt some careful treading.[break][break]

That didn’t mean he was any less curious about what they might find there, though.[break][break]

“I’m assuming you have.” He studies Matias, who is a few paces ahead, expression contemplative. “What exactly are we doing out here, anyway?” Looking for something?

a number of times, actually. the last being with PENELOPE LIVY where they had visited the inn run by a lonely dusclops. he imagines he won't be venturing back there again, at least not with lam of all people.[break][break]

“So you’re the expert here then.” Why doesn't that dispel his foreboding?[break][break]

“Uhhhh…okay.” He doesn’t really have any need to question that explanation, does he? “You just didn’t really explain beforehand.”[break][break]

Which, for some reason he can’t pin, sits funnily in his mind.[break][break]

Still, he does his best to shrug off the creep of wariness setting in, and smiles back with a loose shrug before glancing around. Not that there’s much to see yet apart from a blanket of silvery fog.[break][break]

“Ohhhhkay, whatever you say.” Maybe it’s just the ominous feeling of the environment exacerbating nerves that makes him feel on edge. Not quite fear, though.[break][break]

Lam squints as Matias points it out, picking up the orange glow—expanded by the moisture in the fog until it fades around the aural center point.[break][break]

“Is that a campsite?” He frowns, and something uneasy shifts in his gut as he glances back at his friend. “Why are other people on expedition interesting?”[break][break]

Isn’t the point of exploring, after all, to find oddities that already exist in the rift itself?

In response to the twist of his friend’s grin, Lam’s frown falls further. He winces slightly at the slap on his shoulder. What would normally be a friendly gesture seems weirdly off.[break][break]

All of this is reading wrong.[break][break]

“Right, so let’s just be discreet and go the other way.” Ships in the night. The kick in his gut leaves him with the feeling that that’s the opposite of what Matias wants.[break][break]

He doesn’t try to continue following after the other. He trails to a halt, half inclined to take a step back instead. “Ready for what?”

almost on cue, the voices in the distance grow louder, and from the mist, two shapes come charging toward them.[break][break]

“Maybe? Couldn’t we still?”[break][break]

Apparently not. His brows furrow. “—my training?”[break][break]

Suddenly this all feels a little too planned. The thought that his apparent friend pulled him out into an unknown area for a surprise drop on someone leaves a sour taste in the back of his mouth.[break][break]

There’s no room to argue, though. Gratefully, they’re not in the deep sea, where he might’ve frozen up with FEAR again, though it still crawls under his skin.[break][break]

The corviknight he’d brought is still circling through the fog above. Instead, he releases his flamigo, which aims a THROAT CHOP at the nearest lycanroc with snapping jaws—fully expecting Matias will take a similar course of action.

even if he tries his best not to show it, the grin on his face is apparent, clear as ever as he flicks his wrist up. the charging lycanroc slams into a wall of earth. it yelps in pain, snarling as a pokeball cracks open.[break][break]

"over here!"[break][break]

the lucario that forms has a faint aura emanating off its fur, dark in nature. the SHADOW BOLT flies straight at the lycanroc.[break][break]

the same way the two shapes emerged from the mist earlier, four humanoid shapes appear this time, bearing dark colors which must mean they're no good.[break][break]

For dragging him out here. For shoving into an imminently dangerous situation, seemingly for the exciting thrill of it. “What the hell, man—do you think this is fun?”[break][break]

Shadow and stone cracks against one lycanroc, sending it flying back with wailing pain.[break][break]

His flamigo sweeps the second lycanroc’s feet with a LOW KICK. The circling corviknight caws as it descends at the sight of approaching figures. Shoring up in front of his trainer in IRON DEFENSE.[break][break]

“Shouldn’t we bounce?” They’re outnumbered, Lam has a feeling that a smart retreat isn’t about to be the choice made.

he definitely does not sound very convincing. but then again, he's not trying to be. there's no point to when his expression betrays him.[break][break]

because the moment the four shapes come close enough to recognize their opposition, the look of dread that washes over them is priceless. they turn to look at each other, unsure of what to do.[break][break]

It’s there in the other’s voice—that clear satisfaction in what’s happening. It’s sort of alien, or was it always there? Hiding under the surface? The game he’d played weeks ago dings to life in the back of his mind.[break][break]

Either way, he feels like the stupid one. This isn’t exploring, or even the same sort of training. This is blatantly picking a fight, and Lam didn’t ask for this.[break][break]

He looks over at someone who he thought was a friend like he’d sprouted a second head. “Get them? I’m not a pokemon for you to command, Matias.”[break][break]

Another strike of an irritated grudge manipulated by fear. His normally long-fused patience shortens by more significant increments.[break][break]

At this rate, Lam’s far more wary of him than he is the four approaching strangers. He recalls his flamigo, and sends out his frogadier to stand alongside his corviknight instead.[break][break]

Just for extra padding, though he has no intent of doing anything beyond incapacitating them if it comes down to it.
